Capsule Blog

So folks as you know by now Capsule will be celebrating our 10th birthday in December and as part of a month long celebration we’re moving into Vivid, an art space in Digbeth. Not only will we be hosting a series of live shows with the likes of Lightning Bolt, Monotonix and Beak> alongside some of our favourite Brummies – we’re also producing an exhibition which delves deep into our archive. This will feature 10 years worth of flyers, photos and related ephemera.

WE NEED YOU!

Which comes onto our call out – if you have any photos from past shows or video footage, sound recordings, related stories, memories, reviews, blog posts  please get in touch – all contributions will be included in our exhibition.
Get in touch directly – info[at]capsule.org.uk

or if you have a comment/story or memory of fav show to add you can leave something in the comments on this blog post.

matt_officeMatt Snowden aka one half of Esquilax and the brains behind the Dream Dreams The Dreamer Orkestra popped by last week with a box full of treasures which included loads of old Capsule flyers and photos he’d taken at past gigs. It sure brought back a load of good memories for us.

matt_oxesThis photo was taken at an Oxes show in 2001 at the Jug Of Ale – it was a rather sweaty & raucous night to say the least.
lightning_mattHere is one of Lightning Bolt from 2004 when they played in what is now the theatre space at the Custard Factory – again this was one of those unforgettable shows.

Summed up perfectly by Kris from Ideal Skate shop
Sat at home on a Monday night 6 years ago I got a call recommending that I come to the Custard Factory to see this band that I had not heard of and an hour later I was in the most amazing sonic maelstrom. This was the first time I saw Lightning Bolt.
It was the best chance i ever took…..
Thank you Capsule.
I owe you…xxx”

Dig deep and hunt out those old photos or just send us a comment – all contributions gratefully received – there may even be prizes!!!

  • My walking (whilst completely sober) into one of the panes of glass at the front of the Med Bar at the Boris gig in 2006 will always be one of my most distinct Capsule memories.

Memory - Julian Weaver, Hospital Festival, Brighton, I can't remember when.

We all went down to Brighton for the weekend. Jen, Lisa, Suzy, Nik, Mike etc. Mike In Mono and Floach played the first night. There was some hostility in the crowd because of the poetry being read from a Volvo manual and there was tonnes of some obscure label free brandy and Guinness.

Saturday afternoon there was a kind of panel discussion which Lisa was on along with the guy from Whitehouse and a guy called Julian Weaver. I think Julian was an organiser and had been partying with the Capsule crew. Anyway, someone made an opening speech to introduce the whole thing and handed over to Julian who, in front of a room full of people, could only shake his head and mutter something like " ...can you come back to me later..."

More Brum bands that night and a great weekend overall. Blew all my money on hotels and booze and fish and chips.

Apart from that - Capsule DJ's at ATP, Lightning Bolt, Oxes at The Jug (THE BEAST!!!) and every other Capsule night I was at.

    F**KING ROCK ON

    Cheers

Put some photo's up in my blog, remember Pelican destroying my hearing in particular
  • My fondest Capsule memory was probably back when I was doing ColdRice and we co-promoted the Why? show together. Not only was the show amazing It was also my birthday and you guys go me a cake and got Why? sing happy birthday to me in the middle of their set. There are too many other great shows to mention. Bordeoms at the Barfly was truly amazing. Best time I think I've seen them. Every Supersonic is special for a different reason. Ahh memories.

I remember coming to see one of your first shows, Billy Mahonie and Calvados. At the time there was hardly anything good going on the city so I was super impressed someone had got it together to put this show on. If I'm honest I never expected it to last. I'm so pleased that it has. Happy Birthday girls.

    Thank You

it has to be Melt-Banana at the Med Bar a few years ago...awesome night, moshing !!! at the Med Bar!!! madness, the greatest band on this godforsaken pebble we call Earth...another memorable night was seeing Godspeed You! Black Emperor at the Q Club, astonishing really!!! just getting them over was amazing in itself, and the venue suited them as well...Mogwai at SuperSonic was mighty as well. too many highlights if truth be told...

    Reminiscence #1

I'll never forget the first time the Capsule put Kid 606 (with Gold Chains) on at the custard factory...there was speakers on stage and at the back of the venue...the Kid was playing 4.1 surround ha ha...it was bonkers...He played full on dark noise-scape ambience then heavy ass spak-beat chops and gnarls that sent me into a whirl wind of pogos and shape-making....My Knees have never been the same since!
Cheers laydees....to putting on a heap of class!!
  • Amongst a fair few pics from various shows, I've got video of Battles (playing Barfly), Voice of the Seven Woods (at the Jug of Ale) and Una Corda at the Hare and Hounds (I think?).

So many shows, so many great shows, add that to Supersonic and well... how long have you got?

One memory that stands out for me is giving Micheal Rother (Neu!) and Rodelius (Cluster) a lift to Heathrow after Supersonic 2008. They were both totally cool friendly guys, and really enthused about Supersonic and the whole friendly down to earth Capsule vibe... they wondered my relationship to Capsule - did I work for them? and I said, if Capsule's a family, then I guess I'm kinda like a cousin!! _ I didn't play any music on that journey... though I had joked I'd play Autobahn on repeat...

It's the DIY, down to earth nature of the Capsule world that keeps it great...

keep on keepin' on... and 'OI! TURN IT DOWN A BIT' my old ears are starting to feel it ;)

OK OK I've got my ear plugs, carry on...
