Filmic delights at Supersonic

As well as scores of bands playing over the Supersonic weekend, there will be many filmic delights to choose from. This year Film Ficcones return with Pram to Supersonic. Pram, Birmingham’s own, will provide a sinister cinematic soundtrack to Film Ficciones 16mm projections for a special performance.

Eagle and Feather will present Kipple, cleverly edited footage of detritus of modern living amassed through visits to charity shops and jumble sales. Kipple is a term used by Philip K Dick in his book ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?’ to refer to ‘unwanted or useless junk that tends to reproduce itself’. Eagle and Feather have applied this to their video mashups.

There will be a programme of label shorts from Secretly Canadian and Jagjaguwar including Black Mountain, Phosphorescent and Parts & Labor. Screenings will also include 65 Days of Static ‘Road Movie’, a documentary of a US tour featuring interviews, live performances and footage from dates with the Cure.

The New Art Gallery Walsall in partnership with 7 Inch Cinema and Capsule want to take you on a magical journey back to the 1950s with an evening event of listening, viewing, drinking and doing on Thursday 7 May, 6pm – 9pm.

Capsule gigs – posters by Ben Javens

We have just confirmed a slew of aural delights for your listening & viewing pleasure over the coming months. The very talented artist/illustrator (best known for his designs for Static Caravan recordings) Ben Javens has created some quite extraordinary posters for us. Its well worth checking out his blog and shop to sample more of his work.

First off on Friday 30th of Jan – WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM, an eco Black Metal band of the darkest and most ferocious kind, support comes in the form of the mighty Welsh trio TAINT and ex Doom/Police Bastard and featuring Brummie of the Year, Johnny Dooms band HAXAN – this will take place on Friday 30th of Jan at The Dragon Bar, located on Digbeth High Street. (+ a plug for House Of Gods 16th Birthday at the Rainbow Warehouse which takes place on the same night with the dark lords PCM live from 10pm – 6am)

Then in Capsule style we have a special event for Friday the 13th of Feb with a headline show by Birmingham’s PRAM, visuals by Filmficciones, support from Jagjaguwar (home to Bon Iver + Black Mountain) latest signing WOMEN, this is on  Friday 13th of Feb at the Hare & Hounds.

Later that month, a very rare live collaboration between drummer extraordinaire CHRIS CORSANO and the legendary jazz Sax player PAUL DUNMALL, with support from THEO aka Sam Knight, the solo guitar/drums act which blew audiences away when he performed last year for Capsule.
Advance tickets for these shows are available from www.theticketsellers.co.uk, and we’ve introduced an e-ticket which means a minimal booking fee for you. Tickets are also available from Swordfish in Birmingham city centre and Polar Bear on York Road in Kings Heath.

Capsule at Sonar

Capsule showcase poster designed by Ben Javens
Capsule were invited for the 3rd year running to produce a showcase at this years Sonar Festival in Barcelona. We put forward two Birmingham bands ZX Spectrum Orchestra + Pram, which took place in the Sonar Hall on Thursday 19th of June. Both acts performed to a full to capacity hall (3000 +) with an overwhelming response from the audience, this was our best response yet.

ZX Spectrum Orchestra were recorded live for a show on BBC Radio 1 and interviewed by Rob Da Bank:

We also had a stall in the record and media fare, selling our wares. With thanks to Ben Javens/Pram/ZX Spectrum Orchestra/Jacob + Kate/Dan Davies/Film Ficciones/Geoff Dolman/Juan Rae/Ian Rogers/Katherine Godfrey who all took it in turns to man the stall and promote Birmingham.
We produced ‘Capsules Guide to Birmingham’, a free leaflet which is by no means a definative guide to our fair city but trys to give an alternative view to visitors who will attend Supersonic and to intice those at Sonar. It includes recommendations of things to do/places to stay/eat and shop. It was co-ordinated by Capsule, written by Dan Davies and designed by Ben Javens.

Jenny took some amazing photos from the showcase and the stall which are now on Flickr
