Plan B mag & Capsule present as part of SUPERSONIC FESTIVAL

Oxbow Duo – http://www.theoxbow.com/
Eugene Robinson and Niko Wenner, the singer/lyricist and songwriter/architect of Oxbow’s mean mania, make the making of Oxbow music a thing of rarefied beauty using little more than the rudiments of guitar and voice for the non-electrical rendering of a terror no less absolute because of a lack of volume.

Exorcising demons, gang fights and classical guitars. From Milan to London to Berlin, The Robinson-Wenner Acoustic Duo, sits astride the low-fi fence like an ogre of less than obvious intent with its renditions of Oxbow’s musical back catalog, as well as music created specially for these rare events. A must see, hear, now.

ZX Spectrum is two of Birmingham’s leading sound artists Mike Johnston and
Brian Duffy. As ZX Spectrum Their initial purpose was to explore the
possibilities of working with a reduced palette in an era when computers
have become critically powerful, with the reduced palette in question being
Sir Clive Sinclair’s classic home computer from the 1980s the Sinclair ZX
Spectrum.
Mike Johnston was one time member of Warp act “Plone” and has been
performing his solo act Mike in Mono for the past 2 years. Brian Duffy
is  the instigator of the Modified Toy Orchestra (of which Mike is also a member) together they represent a group of artists and a sound that is unique to Birmingham and is highly respected within the experimental music circuit.

SUPERSONIC FESTIVAL

Supersonic festival is an eclectic and experimental playground, where new
and emergent talent exhibit their skills alongside established and
world-renowned practitioners.

”AS British music festivals go, Birmingham’s annual Supersonic event is the best kind of mixed musical bag, a dizzying assortment of avant rock textures and Heavy Metal thunder on a bill which swings from the sublime to the ridiculous without once seeming ostentatiously eclectic. Not only is the music consistently better than that of most UK weekenders, the atmosphere is equally enticing, making this the perfect festival for people who ‘wouldn’t normally do this kind of thing’…The organisers of Supersonic deserve credit for joining the dots between the cerebral pleasures of the avant garde and the primal pull of planet rock, striking a delicate balance between chin-stroking and headbanging few other British events bother to attempt. There’s a kind of straightforward karma at work here, the thought and care invested in making this event a worthwhile experience for all involved guarantees good word of mouth, and this in turn ensures its survival. One would like to think that Supersonic could provide a good example to the UK’s ailing – in terms of quality, rather than lucrativeness – festival circuit.”

17.30 :: live :: Black Galaxy (UK)

19.30 :: live :: Burning Star Core (US)

21.00 :: live :: Jazzfinger (UK)

Black Galaxy
Formed in 2003, this shifting ensemble (including members of Sand and one of the founders of Napalm Death) explores electro-acoustic improvisation through real-time signal processing, home-built instruments and extended techniques. Shards of bass and séance beats merge with digital ghost fog and glacial electronic modulations to create shadow-inflected soundfields.
http://www.monium.org.uk/

Burning Star Core
Born in Taiwan but now based in Ohio, C Spencer Yeh is a sculptor of breathtaking cliffs of electric sound, and also renowned as an improvising violinist and voice manipulator. Last year’s double CD compilation “Mes Soldats Stupides” showcased the disparate strands of his sonic approach spread over his vast discography, under his oft-adopted alias Burning Star Core. His output ranges from soaring electronic odes to hypnotic drone rock to scathing free jazz.

Jazzfinger
Drenching the north of England in subterranean drones since 1996,
Jazzfinger are currently receiving attention for their minimalist
methodology and maximal aural outcomes. Sat cross-legged, backs to the
audience in reverence to their bank of Marshalls, Hasan Gaylani &
Ben Jones use the lowest of lo-fidelity tools: pick-ups on cheap
guitars, bows, dictaphones, an old gong, older cymbals, walkie talkies
and tapes all merge into a subsonic sludge of mass hypnosis. Finally
ears are opening and many labels including Rebis, Curor, Cut Hands,
Heavy Tapes, Gold Soundz, Mallard Lake, Seed and Beta-Lactam Ring are
giving their recordings belated shelf space with around 20 releases
over the last couple of years, with plenty more to come. Gaylani &
Jones have also performed in early versions of Matthew Bower’s Sunroof!
& Hototogisu outfits.

LAIR OF THE MINOTAUR + CAPRICORNS + UNA CORDA

www.myspace.com/lairoftheminotaur
www.myspace.com/capricornsoflondon

Lair Of The Minotaur combine the sounds of legendary old school metal bands like Celtic Frost, Venom and Slayer with the relentless bombast of High On Fire to create a crippling sound. Joined by the London based behemoth known as Capricorns, featuring four men  currently or previously involved in projects as disparate as Iron Monkey, Orange Goblin, Bridge and Tunnel, The Dukes of Nothing…the list goes on. While the original impetus never went much beyond “does it slay?” the music has developed over the past two years into a heady mix of bone crushing brutality and dark, subtle beauty that has won over fans of the heavy arts worldwide.

ISIS + KTL + OXBOW DUO

Isis create their own universe and rules, they are compromisingly heavy, slow and brutal, but apply a deftness of touch that so many other bands using the quiet/loud dynamic miss completely. They are hard to categories, but all the more interesting for it, using vocals sparingly they approach the idea of a voice as another instrument in their cannon, they want to bludgeon you but they also want you to see the inherent beauty in all that is ugly and while you imagine that a band playing ten minute slow burning epics would be boring to watch they are hypnotising and entrancing and above all exciting.

 KTL
Stephen O’Malley (Sunn 0)))/Khanate) and Peter Rehberg (PITA) are two of the most celebrated artists in the world of extreme music. A collaboration taking in parallel worlds of Extreme Computer Music and Black Metal. A collision of the light and the dark. The collab came about as the two were working on a theatre production by Gisele Vienne and Dennis Cooper, entitled Kindertotenlieder.

BATTLES + MODIFIED TOY ORCHESTRA

Battles features Ian Williams, a leader  in guitar
experimentations of the past 10 years as he fronted DON CABALLERO
and STORM AND STRESS, John Stanier, the Swiss timing machine behind
the kit, formerly of HELMET and currently in TOMAHAWK, David
Konopka of the Boston/Chicago phemononom LYNX and Brooklyn-based
avant-guard composer Tyondai Braxton.

Modified Toy Orchestra
Brian Duffy has been a stalwart of the circuit-bending scene for a
number of years now. He set the bar pretty high for the MTO, his
remit was only to use discarded kid’s keyboards and talking toys to
modify and circuit bend them beyond their original capabilities.
Making perfect pop songs from imperfect instruments.

This year sees a new incarnation of the orchestra, and consists of Lawrence (Pram),  Darren
Joyce (DOTB) Mike Johnston (Plone, Mike in Mono)  Joe Leach and Chris Plant.
