Chrome Hoof to play at Supersonic

Following the news that the 2010 edition of Birmingham’s acclaimed annual Supersonic Festival will be headlined by NAPALM DEATH, SWANS, GODFLESH, HALLOGALLO and MELT BANANA, Capsule are excited to announce the final few acts who will be appearing at this year’s festival, as well as reveal highlights from the incredible film, talks and visual arts programme.

Latest additions to the Supersonic line-up include the awesome live orchestra, Chrome Hoof, experimental hardcore band Ruins, the heavy riffage of Dethscalator and the melancholic pop sounds of Daniel O’Sullivan’s new project, Mothlite. Also, a special AV set from the hugely evocative Barn Owl, the psych/folk/electronic sounds of Health & Efficiency, regular jazz meets free improv in the form of Steve Tromans & Dan Nicholls Duo and Black Sun Drum Corps presenting a percussion parade through the festival, which will combine Supersonic Festival performers and audience members to create a visceral and live massed drumming experience. From metal to avant garde and folk, Supersonic 2010 is set to cement the festival’s reputation as one of the most original and eclectic music festivals in the UK.

Chrome Hoof show

The rapturous applause that greeted the eight-strong collective as they snaked their way from dressing room to stage was deafening, and by the time the jittery keyboard intro to ‘Crystalline’ had shifted into the glam-math stomp of its main riff, not a single eyeball was diverted anywhere other than the otherworldly, shimmering spectacle onstage. Within their number they boasted the talents of a violinist and bassoonist amongst others, giving the band a really vibrant and authentic sound, with doses of electro, old English prog and mathrock jostling for attention within just the first sixty seconds alone.

With the band uniformly clad in matching silver robes (‘Sunn 1999’ perhaps?) and shrouded in heaving dry ice they looked like the resident house band from George Clinton’s mothership, having been lost through time and space for years, honing their skills – but turning them just a little bit insane. Vocalist Lola Olafisoye manages to be sultry, scary, endearing and terrifying all at the same time; her futuristic shades, figure-hugging catsuit and finger extensions giving the appearance of a particularly hard end-of-level boss in some Japanese sci-fi video game.

Lovely new posters…

Chrome Hoof in Birmingham!

We’ve been desperate to have Chrome Hoof back since their amazing show at Supersonic 2007 and it’s taken a while – last year’s scheduled show was cancelled due to those unforseen circumstances that do crop up now and then. But now they’re coming! Along with their platform heels, glittered freak outs and metallic heavy riffs.

Features CATHEDRAL bassist Leo Smee who has brought together a veritable orchestra of musicians decked out in futuristic monk’s robes kicking it like some unholy hybrid of SUN RA, GOBLIN, PARLIAMENT/FUNKADELIC and BLACK SABBATH, complete with choreographed dancers, actors taking vaudeville interludes, and a twelve foot tall metallic ram dominating the dance floor.

We have some pretty amazing shows in the lead up to Supersonic Festival, which include a welcome return of Japanese band Melt Banana, who sweat out a super-adrenalized, maxi-caffeinated collision of frenzied drum rhythms and torturous guitar squeals they are joined by a special performance by  Lash Frenzy (members of Einstellung) Vs Mort and circuit-bender extraordinaire Glatze – this show takes place at the Rainbow Warehouse in Digbeth.

Followed by the first ever Sublime Frequencies tour with Group Doueh (from the Western Sahara) and Omar Souleyman (from Syria) plus Sublime Frequencies DJ set and on certain dates Sublime Frequencies film screenings – this will be a truely unique evening taking place at the Hare & Hounds – not to be missed!

On the 23rd of May Capsule will be taking over Vivid, an arts venue located in deepest darkest Digbeth. Bring ear plugs its going to be a loud one with live performances by  one man noise outfit Prurient playing in collaboration with Cold Cave (members of -Some Girls, Give Up The Ghost, Xiu Xiu), with support from rowdy locals Beestung Lips, Nicholas Bullen & Iron Fist Of The Sun.

Then to round off May we invite back silver clad doom disco divas Chrome Hoof who were one of the highlights of Supersonic 07, for those of you not familiar with these guys think Grace Jones meets Sabbath with a little Sun Ra for good measure!
