Matmos pics and review

Wow – what a show! Sunday’s Matmos show at the mac was really something special, thanks to all who came down. They were joined on stage by J Lesser and were supported by the ever mesmerising John Weise. A special thanks to the vocalists who joined Matmos to re create a 1960s vocal sound piece, complete with tippexed out glasses and monotone chanting, it made the show extra special.

A review by Ross Cotton is online now…

Forwarding what Pierre Schaeffer had once begun, Matmos innovatively break through the musique concrete barrier, with the use of bottled water, scraping singing bowls and ‘anything goes’ percussion, the duo portray abnormality in it’s greatest form of entertainment, both extremely uncomfortable and highly eccentric, the unpredictability provides that thrill ride to anybody who is keen to be pushed to their limit.

Earth review

“Could you imagine Elgar, Bach or Vaughn Williams’ cello adagios thunder-busting the bass-bins? Before tonight, me neither. Which is why Lori Goldston’s not quite so mellow cello opening set of angst-fueled arpeggios, left punters mesmerized, bewildered, fascinated and eye-bleedingly catatonic in equal measure.”

Earth play to a sell out audience – Thanks you

“Tonight, it bordered on reverence, and we know how H&H punters don’t take prisoners. Primal, tribal, viscerally asymmetric, it has to be said Earth’s dronal incantations are not everyone’s chosen vat of hemlock: their bruised muse being very much for the alternatively, esoterically inclined. But, subtle wiles are this band’s perplexing charm. And damnably nice people as well. Happy Daze! Thanks to Capsule for another great gig.”

Phosphorescent review & photos

‘I’m closing my eyes until the colours appear’, sings Matthew Houck. As though he wants everything to change for the better, and we believe him. A hard hitting implication which has only previously been achieved by Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy.

While Jesse Anderson Ainslie surprises us with tear-jerking, guitar solos, made to fit the whole experience with a sense of fragility. It’s easy to see how the actuality gains reliance from the crowd, as simple sways match an alluring, sweet and gentle lap steel echoing sound.

Phosphorescent – 5 star live review and in Brum tomorrow!

Phosphorescent live at ICA, London
(Rated 5/ 5 )

By Ben Walsh

Houck and his hairy cohorts appear ready for it – ready for all of it – playing this intimate venue like it’s the Albert Hall; with bravado and precociousness. Swirling, cinematic and plaintive folk-rock, blessed with Houck’s pained, gorgeously cracked vocals, which are tailor-made for country-and-western laments.

Acid Mothers Temple review

“It’s been two years since Acid Mothers last appeared at the Hare and Hounds, providing a much anticipated return all round, and they certainly don’t disappoint.

The adventurous thrill is still there, but has matured and induced on a whole new level, developing a star-gazing, out-of-this-world theme that leaves you breathless.

The fiercely Egyptian-sounding ‘The Tales of Solar Sail’ whirls an evading concoction of space age Roland synths with snake-charming guitar riffs, making the audience succumb to a hypnotic trance performed by true Pied Pipers.

By this stage, you could physically see the music pulsating around the room, leading everyone on the same journey of amazement, awaiting the Pharaoh to rise from his tomb.”
