Meet Josephine Foster

An enthralling songwriter and performer, Josephine Foster will bring a touch of class to the Bring To Light weekend. A multi instrumentalist, and former opera singer she creates contemporary folk, each record drawing inspiration from a different source, from traditional Spanish music to Emily Dickinson poetry. www.josephinefoster.info

Her new record I’m a Dreamer sees her reinterpreting old country music in her inimitable style. You can listen to the track ‘Sugarpie I’m Not The Same’ over at The Quietus.

Weekend tickets for Bring To Light are currently on sale for £40 via www.theticketsellers.co.uk, the event also features Richard Dawson, Kogumaza, Zomes and many more. Read the full details here.

Nozinja on dancing Shangaan style

You are invited to join in on the biggest dance craze from South Africa – Shangaan Electro. The collective will be in Birmingham on 25th October delivering a couple of FREE workshops. These are aimed at all ages and abilities. The Quietus visited Shangaan founder Nozinja and attended a dance session…

“It’s hot and sweaty but I find the music provokes an inclination to mess around like a child, and I don’t even feel too put off by the fact that Cat, the photographer, keeps laughing at me. (I try to repeat some of the moves I learned a week later at a barbecue at the Nike 1948 shop, and for my troubles get laughed at there, too.) It’s funny, because normally if people laugh at your dancing you’d be embarrassed, but the very nature of Shangaan electro dancing is that it puts you in a jubilant mood.” Read the full article

You can join these free sessions by emailing [email protected].

Shangaan Electro will perform at Bring To Light and at Library of Birmingham on 25th and 26th October. Tickets for Bring To Light are available now.

Meet Richard Dawson

A one of a kind singer and performer, we know Richard was a highlight for many at last year’s Supersonic Festival and he’s back in Birmingham at Bring To Light 25-27 October. We thoroughly recommend you listen to his recent record ‘The Glass Trunk’, an incredible record Richard created after some research time at Tyne & Wear Museum. The record is inspired by people’s histories and sounds like it was plucked from an archive itself.

Here’s a review of the record by Stewart Lee:

Richard will play at Bring To Light next month, and you can purchase weekend tickets for £40 from www.theticketsellers.co.uk

And Richard will also be delighting families with his twisted tales at a very special Kids Gig on Saturday 26th October. More details to follow.

Deliving into the Delia Derbyshire archives

As part of the Bring To Light weekend. we’ll be paying homage to one of the pioneers of electronic music, Delia Derbyshire. The Delia Darlings exist to pay sonic homage to Derbyshire via her archive held at University of Manchester. Currently, Delia Darlings are experimental electronic Caro C and contemporary classical Ailís Ní Ríain. After Delia Derbyshire Day in Manchester in Jan 2013, the darlings have an info-show that spreads the magic of the fascinating archive.

The aim of this project is to increase the profile and honour the legacy of the late great Delia Derbyshire, as well as championing female experimental composers past and present.

At Bring To Light, Delia Darlings will present:

Caro C – live performance of ‘Audient, My Dear’ and Ailís Ní Ríain – live performance of “The Consquences of Falling” for trumpet and double bass . Both performances will be creative response to interacting with the archive of Delia Derbyshire.

Both performances will be preceded by an intro sharing insights into Delia’s archive and working methods and playing extracts from the archive which have rarely been heard in public. There’ll also be a Q&A with the artists.

Plus screening of Kara Blake’s award-winning documentary “The Delian Mode”

There’s a lovely interview with Delia Derbyshire on soundcloud, where she discusses working at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, and her famous work on the Doctor Who theme.

Masaki Batoh BRAIN PULSE MUSIC

Brain Pulse Music’, is experimentation with brain waves and sound. Formerly of the Japanese band Ghost, Batoh has dedicated years of research to this project, investigating the bioelectric functions of the human brain combined with the traumatic aftermath of Japan’s Great East Earthquake. Batoh combines this work with traditional folk influences to create and powerful and pure expression of the human condition.

Bring to Light / 25-27 October (and Supersonic news)

After a hugely successful, artistically exciting and game changing 10 years, Capsule are using this milestone as an opportunity to re imagine Supersonic Festival. The festival will return in April 2014, in a new format, at an exciting new venue, with experimental new music and art remaining at its heart.

It’s been a wonderful decade of adventurous music, beginning in 2003 with a one-day event featuring Coil and LCD Soundsystem. Last year’s anniversary event encompassed a weekend of installations, workshops, talks, films, new commissions, and live performances with Kim Gordon, the Oxbow Orchestra, Penny Rimbaud and many more.

We’re enormously grateful for the loyal support of our audience, and we hope you will join us 25-27 April for Supersonic Festival’s next chapter.

Dinos Chapman

And while you wait, Capsule are producingBring to Light, a weekend of performances 25-27 October as part of the Library of Birmingham opening season. This will see performances from visual artist turned sonic performer Dinos Chapman, South Africa’s Shangaan Electro, the ‘brain pulse music’ of Masaki Batoh, songstress Josephine Foster, Robedoor, and more.
