Join artist Laura Kate Chapman whose work takes inspiration historic Parker Collection of Children’s Books and Games, celebrating the tradition of hand drawn artistic methods.

Throughout the season you ca explore the library via the Discovery Trail, the trail includes the Theatre Jukebox, by Stand + Stare, an arcade-style cabinet that plays stories instead of records and allows you to choose the chapters you want. You can listen to accounts of imagined journeys and travel stories inspired by the Wingate Bett Transport Ticket collection. Wingate Henry Bett was the first president of the Transport Ticket Society and founder of the Electric Railways Society. He co authored Great British Tramway Networks with John C Gillham which became the bible of British tramways. His collection of transport tickets is one of the Library of Birmingham’s collections.

And at the end of the month, Capsule will be invading the library with a programme of experimental music. Very much a Supersonic Festival inspired weekend, Bring To Light features Josephine Foster, Dinos Chapman and Deafheaven as well a celebration of the work of Delia Derbyshire and a special Kids Gig with Richard Dawson. Los Angeles noiserap trio, clipping will be making their first trip to the UK this October and will play Bring To Light on Sunday 27th October. Playing in support of their self-released debut ‘midcity’, audiences will also get a chance to hear some of clipping’s new material for their two upcoming 2014 releases on Sub Pop and Deathbomb Arc. Yes, they know about noise. But this is hip hop.

A late additon to proceedings, we’re pleased to sneak one last act to add some raucous energy. Comprising four bassists, a singing drummer and a baby’s head theremin, Evil Blizzard are a live experience unlike any other. An enthralling songwriter and performer, Josephine Foster will bring a touch of class to the Bring To Light weekend. You are invited to join in on the biggest dance craze from South Africa – Shangaan Electro. The collective will be in Birmingham on 25th October delivering a couple of FREE workshops. These are aimed at all ages and abilities. The Quietus visited Shangaan founder Nozinja and attended a dance session…

“It’s hot and sweaty but I find the music provokes an inclination to mess around like a child, and I don’t even feel too put off by the fact that Cat, the photographer, keeps laughing at me. (I try to repeat some of the moves I learned a week later at a barbecue at the Nike 1948 shop, and for my troubles get laughed at there, too.) It’s funny, because normally if people laugh at your dancing you’d be embarrassed, but the very nature of Shangaan electro dancing is that it puts you in a jubilant mood.” Read the full article

A one of a kind singer and performer, we know Richard was a highlight for many at last year’s Supersonic Festival and he’s back in Birmingham at Bring To Light 25-27 October. We thoroughly recommend you listen to his recent record ‘The Glass Trunk’, an incredible record Richard created after some research time at Tyne & Wear Museum. The record is inspired by people’s histories and sounds like it was plucked from an archive itself.
